GREEK LANGUAGE DAY

February 9th is International Greek Language Day (Παγκόσμια Ημέρα Ελληνικής Γλώσσας). This day was launched officially in 2007 by the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This date was selected because it is the official date commemorating the Greek National Poet Dionysios Solomos, who wrote the Greek national anthem, “Hymn to Liberty”) - (Ύμνος εις την Ελευθερίαν’). The celebration of the Greek language seeks to highlight its critical role throughout the centuries. The Greek language has been spoken continuously for the last 40 centuries, with the same alphabet for the last 28 centuries and the exact spelling for the last 24.

Last Tuesday, we celebrated this important day in our Greek school by creating “I love the Greek language” flags and exploring words other languages have borrowed from Greek.
